Patrick Piuze produces an exceptionally delicious Chardonnay from his combined knowledge of the Chablis region and winemaking. At the age of eighteen, this Montreal native passionately began his career in wine. By 2000, he travelled to the legendary vineyards of Burgundy to learn the handcrafted art of winemaking. Under the craftsmanship of producers such as Olivier Leflaive in Puligny Montrachet, Jean-Marie Guffens in Verget, and Jean-Marc Brocard, he learned the necessary skills to produce this Terroir de Chablis bottle under his own name. Jean-Marc Brocard recruited him to be a cellar master and head wine maker, motivating him after eight years in 2008 to boldly produce his own label. His vast experience in the northern, colder wine region helped him understand and use the essence of the terroir for this fantastic 2009 vintage. His passion for the Chablis region is strongly expressed in this Chardonnay, boasting the unique flinty, or “steely” taste, with a lesser influence of fruit and oak like other Chardonnay wines of France. His wine fermentation occurs in temperature controlled steel tanks with no use of oak. The emphasis of terroir employed in this Chardonnay gives it a little more acidity, which exhibits clean, intense and precise flavors. Moreover, the wine reveals flinty, ascetic and overflowing character. This distinctive, individually inspired Terroir de Chablis can age very well and pairs superbly with any appetizer of fresh green salads, soups, and seafood and also with exquisite dishes such as lobster bisque and cashew chicken, this Chardonnay will bolster any connoisseur’s palette.
2009 is only Patrick Piuze’s second vintage, but he has already become one of the most sought after producers in Chablis. The critics have gone nuts for the racy, pure, and intense wines made by this young, rock star winemaker. Patrick is obsessed with the terroir of Chablis and bottles several basic cuvees from the region’s individual villages. The Terroir de Chablis is produced from fruit sourced from the actual town of Chablis. A crystal pure nose of green fruit, lemon-lime is followed-up by stony and austere flavors in the mouth. This classic Chablis is bone dry on the finish. This is an incredible value.
