About the Winery The Selbach family’s heritage in the wine business dates to 1660: Selbach’s ancestors shipped wines down the Mosel in their own ships, the wine carried in oak barrels made by cooper Matthias Oster, the great-grandfather on the paternal side of the family. Thus, the winery developed as both a top estate producing some of the region’s best wine, and also as a négociant and brokerage firm, consolidating the production of smaller growers. Johannes, like his late father Hans, has continued the use of traditional oak fuder in his cellar, bringing in new large casks every few years. Vinification is carried out in a combination of fuder and stainless steel, in an hands-off manner with no fining, and predominantly with wild yeasts. The focus is on meticulous work in the vineyard with the aim to produce and bring home perfect fruit. The next generation of Selbach’s have joined the family business, son Sebastian and daughter Hannah (pictured below with Andrea and Elisabeth) For single-site Mosel rieslings from leased vineyards & worked under Selbach supervision, producing in effect a 2nd label or négociant line with the Selbach imprimateur. The wines are made by Johannes Selbach, but until a new winery is built they are not made under the same roof as Selbach-Oster. Even when that day comes, do not confuse the two; Selbach-Oster will always be the premium range, exclusively estate-bottled from vineyards owned and worked by Selbach.
About the Wine Juicy yet delicate, the acidity mingles with the fruit and soil content leaving the mouthfeel with an amazing texture. Upon first sip, your palate will be delighted with layers of white flowers and mineral-laden fruits. This wine is made with the same love and care that goes into the other Selbach wines. “A lot of brilliance here and a superb vintage again; tautly floral-funky (hyacinth, fading peony, white iris) and almost peppery; a wonderful wash of balsam-soaked mineral; also very much dry-ish. AN INSANE VALUE!”—Terry Theise, Importer
Critical Acclaim “Johannes Selbach, this estate’s winemaker and director (as well as Terry Theise’s man-on-the-ground in Germany) is on fire. His wines are top flight and yet his winemaking appears to be improving with each vintage. Selbach’s wines typically appear substantially better after a few years of cellaring.”–Pierre Rovani, The Wine Advocate * * * 2015 Giuseppe e Figlio Mascarello Vigna Santo Stefano di Perno Barbera D'Alba DOC Regular Price: $57.99 SALE PRICE: $49.29 15% OFF THIS WEEK ONLY!
About the Winery The members of the Giuseppe Mascarello family have been growing wines for more than a century and a half, first as farmers running the Manescotto estate in the village of La Morra for the marchesa Giulia Colbert Faletti di Barolo, and then on their own property since 1881. The Mascarello family property extends over 15 hectares of vineyards, all located within the Barolo wine-growing area. Some, like the MONPRIVATO vineyard, can now be said to be a part of the family history, while the grapes grown on others were first purchased by 4th generation Mauro before–having had the opportunity to ascertain their quality–he managed to buy the vineyards for the estate. The grapes from each single vineyard are vinified separately, a procedure that allows for the making of wines of the highest quality and with their own particular properties, varying from vineyard to vineyard. The name of the vineyard and the village where it is located are given on the label of each wine.
Planted in 1994, this 4.13-acre vineyard site has been in the Mascarello family since 1989. Placed 984 feet above sea level, facing south/southwest (allowing for ample sunlight, which further ripens the grapes), the vines are situated on clayey-sandy, calcareous soils. After harvest in the beginning of October, the wines are traditionally vinified then matured in medium-sized oak barrels for few months. When poured, expect deep ruby red, tending to purplish hues accompanied by intense aromas of ripe fruit. On the palate this wine is powerful and with an excellent body, well-balanced and great terroir. The finish is intense yet everlasting, leaving the senses intrigued.
