About the Winery

The possession of these vineyards dates back to 1813 when their ancestor, in an extreme demonstration of personal courage, succeeded in preventing the sacking of Mülheim by Napoleon. They produce a wide variety of wines from estate-grown grapes that reflect the individual style of each single vineyard. The terroir of their steep vineyard sites is generally fresh weathering grey slate with different compositions of ferruginous (Brauneberg), mineral quartz (Veldenz), or clay soils (Graach, Erden, Wehlen, Mülheim), which determine character and flavour. The wines of Max Ferdinand Richter enjoy worldwide acclaim. They are ambassadors of the rich cultural heritage of the unique Mosel landscape.

About the Wine

The winemakers at Richter believe that great wine comes from the vineyard, not the cellar. With this in mind they strive for precision in their daily viticultural work. The challenge of cultivating vines on the steep, slate slopes of Mosel is overcome by fastidious handwork, small crop sizes, all-natural fertilizers and sustainable farming practices. Additionally, all harvesting is done by hand. Vinification starts with gentle pressing and slow temperature controlled fermentation in traditional old oak barrels (fuders). This careful, deliberate process preserves the vineyard-grown quality of the grapes, develops the unique character of the single-vineyard cuvees, and to gives Richter wines exceptional longevity. When possible, they utilize natural yeasts and eschew chemical fining agents. Max Ferdinand Richter’s 48 steep acres are spreadout in the Middle Mosel Valley between Erden and Brauneberg. The average age of Richter vines is 40 years.

Fresh, delicate aroma of apple blossoms and a hint of citrus and slate. An animating, enjoyable and juicy Riesling with crystal clear mineral texture; excellent balance of aromatic sweetness and racy fruit acid.

2014 Celler Mas Doix Les Crestes Priorat Grenache Blend

$32.99 / $28.04

About the Winery

Winemaker pictured above (left) with Andrea and Elisabeth Maranca at the shoppe. The Celler Mas Doix is a winery created by the Doix & Llagostera family in 1998; it is the reinitiation of a tradition that began in 1850. The gold medal obtained in the Universal Exhibition of Barcelona in 1888 and the silver medal won in the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1878, remind us of the passion with which Juan Extrems Doix, Juan Doix's grandfather, used long ago to look after the vineyards and produce his wines. The phylloxera outbreak did not mean the end of the family's vineyards. They were replanted with Garnacha and Cariñena varieties, native to the Priorat region, thereby maintaining the growth of the vineyards while the production was sent to the co-operative in Poboleda until it was produced in the winery. Nowadays, the winery is laboring with love and passion for the fruit grown in hundred-year-old vineyards so they can produce great wines.

 About the Wine

20-year-old Red Grenache vines (80%), old Carignan (10%) and Syrah (10%). Grapes grown exclusively on steep slate “licorella” hillsides. With a mild winter and timely snowfall in February, spring had little rain and high average temperatures; June allow the winery to face a heatwave in July and more temperate and dry August and September. Harvest began on the 15th of September and lasted until the 25th October. Slowly but surely, it was a quiet and very good harvest. Grapes were picked by hand using 10 kg. boxes and afterwords, classifications were determined berry by berry on a double sorting table in the winery. Aged eight months in second year French oak barrels. Approximately 2,900 cases. Unfined and unfiltered.

Bright cherry colors with bluish-violet hues, this red wine denotes youth and vivacity. With spicy aromas, ripe fruit, and minerality, one can expect to find their palate delighted by a flavorful, fresh wine with a structured and long finish. When moving the glass, it has an agile movement with abundant tears.

2010 San Felice Agricola Il Grigio Chianti Classico Riserva

$29.99 / $25.49

About the Winery

Agricola San Felice is steeped in local lore and history. Named after a local early Christian Saint from the 18th century, the property was bought by the Grisaldi Del Taja family – the founding members of the Chianti Classico consortium. The family produced wine for several centuries until 1968 when the estate passed to Enzo Morganti. Prior to assuming control, Enzo Morganti spent two decades researching and experimenting with Sangiovese clones at Tenuta di Lilliano. At San Felice, he restructured and transformed this venerable estate, concentrating on high quality winemaking, systematic scientific research and thoughtful vineyard purchases, which included the Campogiovanni vineyard in Montalcino in 1984. Today the property includes a 1,853 acre resort, 445 acres of vineyards and a 44 acre parcel dedicated to experimental viticulture and genetic improvement of Sangiovese.

About the Wine

Selected from grapes considered to be the best Chianti Classico-area vineyards on the Agricola San Felice estate, between 1,150 to 1,300 feet. With an average soil consistency, rich in coarse material such as limestone and loam from the disinigration of Alberese and Galestro and resting on rock such as Monte Morello sandstone or Chianti sandstone. Fermentation on the skins for 18 to 20 days followed by malolactic fermentation in steel. 80% of the batch is left to age in Slavonian oak barrels for 24 months, while the remaining 20% is left to age in French oak casks for about six months. Ageing potential of 10 years.

Cheese of the Week:

Tickler's English Cheddar

Funny name, serious cheddar. Pasteurized cow's milk is harvested from the 'lush Devon milk fields' and taken to the Tickler creamery in the U.K.'s Taw Valley. After the 40 pound blocks have been made with traditional cultures they are aged a full 18 months, during which an unusual depth of tangy, sweet flavor develops. The cheeky company so loves their award winning cheese that they specially created a beer that provides the ultimate pairing! Though you can't find it around here, a similar bitter blond ale should do the trick of balancing Tickler's nutty sweetness.

Have a wonderful week and thank you for your continued support!

Cheers!
