Julien Braud La Bulle de L'Ouest NV Petillant Muscadet $27.99/ $23.79 About the Winery Julien Braud hails from the small village of Monnieres in the Sèvre et Maine appellation. Today he owns just over seven hectares, with only around five hectares going into his production. He began his winemaking career at his family’s estate, domain Fief aux Dames where he worked through the 2011 vintage. In 2012, he ventured out on his own when he took over three hectares from his parents. His vision was to work in a way that highlighted the individual terroirs of the region and the heights to which Melon de Bourgogne could be taken. At the young age of 29 years old, Julien is one of only a handful of the next generation of winemakers in the region. He is bucking the trend in the area, which in recent years has seen a decline in producers and Melon de Bourgogne vineyards given the challenges of making a living selling Muscadet. He remains undeterred! Julien works entirely organically and will be fully certified as such come 2016. He also incorporates biodynamic approaches. He uses horses in his vineyards to minimize soil compaction, hand harvests, uses only natural yeasts for fermentation after a gentle press, and ages the wines on their lees in glass-lined, underground cement vats. A truly quality-minded approach to that has resulted in wines of complexity, texture and balance. .JPG)
About the Wine Made in the 'Methode Ancestral,' this is a delightfully fun sparkling wine from the Loire Valley. With just a hint of residual sugar, this wine is perfect with spicy foods, Asian cuisine, or just on its own as an aperitif! This zippy little wine is bright and crisp, with perky effervescence and a touch of sweetness. With light notes of citrus, rose petals, and herbs, it’s balanced perfectly to be easy-drinking, fun, and refreshing. Serve as an aperitif, with steamed clams or mussels. 2014 Goisot Saint Bris Chablis Sauvignon Blanc $22.99 / $19.54 About the Winery 100% Sauvignon Blanc, 4.38 hectares of north-facing oriented vineyard land from the lieux-dits of Cornevin, Cote de la Canne and La Roncie. 50% of the vines are 10-15 years old and 50% are 15-40 years in age. Jurassic soil of kimmeridgien clay with fosilized oyster shell "Exogyra Virgula" The vines are farmed biodynamically (certified) and the grapes are harvested by hand. The wine is vinified at cold temperatures in stainless steel vats using native yeasts. The wine is aged on its fine lees. This Sauvignon de Saint Bris shares many attributes with top bottlings of Sancerre from terres blanches soils, and it is generally cropped at lower yields than all but the very best estates in Sancerre. .JPG)
About the Wine The 2014 Saint-Bris Exogyra Virgula, that alien-like name originating from a fossil found in the soil, comes from four parcels located on the same altitude. It has a strong nettle and gooseberry-scented bouquet that has a touch of asparagus underneath. The palate is fresh and a little herbaceous on the entry, touches of asparagus coming through in the glass with a clean and sprightly finish. It is a "hardcore" Sauvignon Blanc for those that adore the variety. A slightly riper nose displays aromas of white and yellow orchard fruit along with floral and citrus top notes where the sauvignon blanc character is a bit less evident. I very much like the mouth feel of the intense, detailed and relatively powerful medium-bodied flavors that deliver excellent length on the solidly complex and somewhat tighter and more precise finale. If your taste runs to sauvignon blanc, this is worth checking out. 2010 Sky Vineyards Red House Howell Mountain Napa Valley Zinfandel $22.99 / $19.54
About the Winery Sky Vineyards is a fourteen-acre vineyard and small family winery nestled between the crown of Mt. Veeder and the expansive sky. Planted at an elevation of 2100 feet and on the eastern-facing hillside, the Zinfandel and Syrah grapevines ripen under full sun and fog-cooled evenings into intense berries. The reddish volcanic soil and unique physical characteristics of Sky produce a unique wine that reflects where it was grown and the care and attention it receives at every step of the process. Sky Vineyards strives to incorporate sustainable practices into the cultivation of the vines and operation of the winery. Responsible practices include use of permanent cover crops, dry farming, promotion of bird and beneficial insects, and use of organic or low impact pesticides and fertilizers. The resulting intensely flavored fruit is then hand-harvested and fermented in open top one-ton bins. Punch down is performed by hand three times per day. After fermentation, it is pressed in a traditional basket press and aged in French oak barrels. Lore Olds designs artwork for each new vintage.
About the Wine Sky wines typically have intense fruit, raspberry, violet and peppery flavors. They are well structured and have balanced acid and tannins. These Zinfandels age beautifully, and while enjoyable when young, they continue to mature. Sky Vineyards is proud of the one hundred percent hand-crafted Zinfandel and Syrah it produces and believes the care and attention is reflected in every glass. Sky has been making 100% estate grown and estate bottled zinfandel since the late 1970s. They believe that wine should express where it originates and endeavor to allow their zinfandel to reflect the natural beauty of its home. The zinfandel often shows mountain sage garrigue, pomegranate or cherry fruit, and a peppery quality. The wine is lower alcohol than many California zinfandels, and consequently more elegant and nuanced than expected. Due to the structure, acidity, and relatively low alcohol content, Sky Zins age remarkably well. Most vintages will last for 10-30 years. Many of their wines from the eighties and nineties continue to present in a youthful and alive manner. 2012 Roberts and Rogers Louer Family Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon $59.99 / $50.99
About the Winery In 1999, longtime friends Roger Louer and Robert Young commenced efforts to establish a first-class Cabernet Sauvignon wine brand, sourcing the grapes from Howell Mountain, Napa Valley, California. Located to the east of St. Helena, at an elevation ranging from 1400 to 2200 feet, Howell Mountain is considered one of the most prestigious wine growing regions in the world. Roberts and Rogers sources its grapes for this wonderful wine from the Howell Mountain sub appellation area and for the present vintages from a vineyard jointly developed by Roberts and Rogers in 2000. The first vintage of Roberts + Rogers, Howell Mountain was the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, released in 2007 with around 300 cases available. The wine was immediately met with a warm welcome from the privileged few to enjoy that first vintage.
