About the Winery

Frank Besson is a true iconoclast. There is no legal designation for method Champenoise Gamay made in Beaujolais. Franck’s very independent vision sprang from his frustration that the extremely high quality of his grapes was being overlooked simply because his vines are not within a Cru appelation of Beaujolais. Farmed Organically, hand harvested on slopes of dense granite and located near the town of Jullié at the foothill of the Cru Juliénas and on the terroir of Beaujolais-Villages, Franck decided that he must do something completely different to call attention to the quality and he did!

Since 2009, the entire estate is in transition to Organic certification. Frustrated by the small exposure of the Beaujolais-Villages, Franck decided to innovate by producing the finest sparkling wines made from Gamay, proving the finesse and potential of this grape planted on Granit soil. Made by the “Methode Traditionnelle” entirely at the estate in Jullie, his sparkling wines are aged for a minimum of 12 month on wooden “pupitre”, or rack, (as shown above, right), the finest way to make bubbly.

About the Wine

This sparkling rosé displays charming rose petal hues as well as aromas of fresh strawberry and raspberry. With a refreshing touch of acidity, thanks to its slow effervescing process, this wine will reveal a rounded and slightly sweet first taste which is perfectly balance by a dry finish. Refined bubbles add to the refreshing character of the wine with a delightful persistence, including bright and appealing fruit. Dessus la Carriere is made from two lieux dits (Semon and Paradis) that sit, Southwest-facing, above an abandoned limestone quarry. Hand harvested and fermented in stainless steel using indigenous yeasts, the wine is then aged in stainless steel tanks to protect the underlying expressions of terroir. You won't find a single stave of wood in the entire winery.

About the Winemaker

Although he was born in Ontario, Cameron Woodbridge has always had an affinity for the West Coast. After 25 years in Victoria, Cameron moved to California to be closer to his family. His brother, Jayson, had already set off on his own winemaking journey and Cameron was eager to join him. Cameron remembers falling in love with wine in the 90’s, and of course Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley was the object of his adoration and in 2004 joined his brother “just for one harvest”.

Needless to say, that “one harvest” has extended to many more…Cameron was hooked. His winemaking adventures have taken him to Australia, Argentina, and back to the Napa Valley, where he began working at Hundred Acre. In 2006, Cameron decided to start his own winemaking venture with a purchase of 7 tons of fruit from Jericho Canyon. This was the birth of his renowned Stormy Weather brand. Today, Cameron lives in Victoria with his family Since 2012, he has been the winemaker for Haymaker and Wolf’s Head.

About the Wine

The Wolf’s Head Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the Calistoga and Oak Knoll regions located in the northern part of Napa Valley, home to some of the biggest, boldest wines in the Napa region. The vines are planted in a rich volcanic red soil and the high daytime and cool night time temperatures provide for intense colors, rich flavors, a touch of acidity and a ton of tannic structure in the grapes.

Upon initial pour, the 2014 Wolf’s Head Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits aromas of fresh leather, earthy minerals and dusty graphite. With a little time in the glass these characteristics evolve into sweet, dark cherries, blackberries and cassis with hints of tobacco. Dark cherries and black currants dominate the mid-palate and carry through into the long finish with some cedar notes. This wine shows great fruit extraction and a characteristically long finish that leaves one wanting more. This is the third vintage of Wolf’s Head and Cameron Woodbridge has really hit his stride with this wine. 740 Cases Produced.

“Oh, one other thing, if you are wondering where the name comes from, it came from the shape of out 118 acre Wolf’s Head property which is in fact shaped like a wolf’s head. The logo on the back label is the polygon of the property.  Looks like a wolf’s head, no?”-Cameron Woodbridge, Winemaker
