Chene Bleu Limited Edition Gift Box (2-Bottle and 3-Bottle Formats Available)

Nicole Rolet, Principal of Chêne Bleu Wines, says:  "I first got the idea for a show-stopping display box about 8 years ago. I wanted to explain the story of our two flagship wines, Abélard & Héloïse, named after the famed medieval French lovers – the Romeo and Juliet of France. I wanted to showcase them as the protagonists at the heart of the story of our little vineyard through a unique piece of design. But it ended up taking another 8 YEARS to produce this limited-edition Gift Box, and I’m SO HAPPY that it’s finally seeing the light!"

2-Bottle Format includes The Limited Edition Gift Box with one bottle each of the Chene Bleu 'Abelard' Rouge and the Chene Bleu 'Heloise' Rouge–$224.99

3-Bottle Format includes The Limited Edition Gift Box with one bottle each of the Chene Bleu 'Abelard' Rouge, the Chene Bleu 'Heloise' Rouge, and the Chene Bleu Blanc–$274.99

About the Winery

The fine estate of Roagna has long roots in the commune of Barbaresco, having been started very early in the twentieth century by Vincenzo Roagna. Vincenzo passed on the reigns to his son Giovanni Roagna, who in his turn saw his son Alfredo succeed him as the head of the estate. Today the property is run by Luca Roagna, the fifth generation of the family. Luca was born in 1980 and succeeded to winemaking for the property soon after his graduation from oenological school in 2001. The style of the estate’s wines has been carefully passed down through all five generations of Roagna family, with the wines made in a very traditional and classic style. These are deep, complex and structured wines that are built to age and handsomely reward cellaring.

The heart of the Roagna estate is its six and a half hectares of vineyards in the commune of Barbaresco, most of these lying in the fine cru of Pajè. From the Pajè vineyard the Roagna family now makes three distinct cuvées, a Barbaresco “normale” labeled as Barbaresco “Pajè,” a Barbaresco Paje Vecchie Vite and “Crichët Pajè" - made from the crest of the Paje cru. In 1989 the family’s long-held aspirations of owning top level crus in Barolo comparable to their Pajè holdings in Barbaresco came true, when they purchased a parcel historically known as La Rocche e La Pira, in the fabled village of Castiglione Falletto.

About the Wine

Practicing organic, the grapes for this wine come from Roagna's younger vines (25 years old and younger ) in Pira in Castiglione Falletto (Barolo) and in Paje in Barbaresco. Most vines are 20-25 years old. Varying in soil content: from marl, calcareous to sandy calcareous. After hand harvesting at the end of September, beginning on October–the fermentation lasts ten days in large wood casks. After which, the wine is then aged in large neutral French botti. The oak Luca uses is never toasted but instead made by using hot steam instead of flame. The wine is normally aged for five years in wood before release. While this wine is made from Luca's "younger vines," most producers would use this fruit for their Barbaresco or Barolo. The wine could easily be mistaken for either in a blind tasting.

About the Winery

Bernard Magrez acquired the prestigious Château Pape Clément in the 1980s. It was his very first vineyard. Now owner of three other Grands Crus Classés in the Bordeaux region, La Tour Carnet (Haut Médoc) Château Fombrauge (Saint-Emilion) and Clos Haut Peyraguey (Sauternes), Bernard Magrez is today an important Bordeaux businessman in the wine sector, owner of 42 great international estates.

About the Wine

This great estate run with obsessive perfection by visionary proprietor Bernard Magrez has turned out a second wine, the 2012 Le Clementin de Pape Clement, which is rather remarkable. Deep ruby/purple it is superior to nearly every vintage of Pape Clement in the 1970s and early 1980s. Deep ruby/purple with notes of plum, cassis, tobacco leaf and licorice, the wine is medium-bodied, with sweet, supple tannin and a long heady finish. This is drinking well already, while also showing some burgeoning complexity. It should last for at least 10-15 years.

Snack of the Week:

Murray's High Plains Cheddar

Sweeter than your typical cheddar, with a crumbly yet creamy consistency, Murray's High Plains cheddar represents generations of Midwestern cheesemaking. All of its milk comes from local farms, all within 15 miles of the creamery the cheddar is made in. The High Plains cheddar is a unique hybrid - an Alpine cheddar inspired by Swiss Mennonite roots. The resulting block is surprisingly sweet and nutty, balancing subtle grassy notes that linger on the palate. Approachable almondy tones are accented by a glass of Rose.
