About the Winery

Situated in the splendid area of Northern Montalcino close to Biondi Santi's Il Greppo and our very own La Serena, the wines of San Filippo are age worthy and elegant, though very approachable in their youth. The estate totals 22 hectares, 11 of which are under vine dedicated mostly to Sangiovese. Founded in 1972, the estate was recently purchased by Robesto Giannelli who restored and renovated the entire facility. With the help of Paolo Caciorgna, Roberto is producing 2500 cases of Brunello aged in Slavonian and Allier oak casks each year, as well as 800 cases of a delicious Rosso di Montalcino aged 6 months in used barriques and large casks.

About the Wine

The sangiovese vines for this wine are situated on clayey, calcareous soils with shale and fossil fragments. After harvesting on the first ten days of October, the wine is fermented in stainless steel. The secondary fermentation is then done in vats of cement, stainless steel, and wood. Afterwhich, the winery employs oak for ten months of ageing and further aged for four months in bottle. When poured, hues of ruby red shine throughout the glass. Aromas of red cherry and sweet spices jump out of the glass and mingle with the senses. On the palate this wine is full yet balanced with well-integrated tannins and silky texture. A nice, persistent finish. Approximately 1,660 cases produced for the vintage.

About the Winery

The Detert wines are crafted by brothers Tom and John Garrett and cousin Bill Cover, the three great-grandsons behind the Detert label. In their youth, the three got their start in winemaking while helping the family make small batches of Cabernet Franc at home in the garage. Then Tom’s career in the wine industry really began in 1999 when he joined Turley Wine Cellars in St. Helena to learn the craft as a cellar hand. From there, he spent 15 years working with exceptional winemaking mentors at some of Napa Valley’s finest wineries including Joseph Phelps, Robert Mondavi and Revana Family Vineyards. Since 2013, Tom has focused solely on Detert Family Vineyards and his other Napa Valley-based winery, Dakota Shy. Tom lives in Napa Valley with his wife and three boys. John lives in Petaluma with his wife and family and is still at the vineyard at every opportunity. He's grateful that the business of winegrowing involves similar experiences and rewards. Bill lives in Petaluma, CA with his wife and three girls.

Located along the western foothills of Napa Valley’s celebrated Oakville district, adjacent to Crabb’s historic To Kalon estate, the Detert family vineyard has grown outstanding Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon since 1953. Over the decades, their grapes have helped establish Napa Valley, and particularly Oakville, as the prestigious Cabernet winegrowing region in the world. Four generations of their family’s winegrowing and years of consistently remarkable home wine production revealed to the team that they should be showcasing the Detert vineyard in a small production wine. The mission is to produce exceptional estate wines that are a pure expression of the land.

About the Wine

Very floral, with beautiful violet, rose petal and fresh black currant, light roasted coffee bean and black licorice aromas. Bright, refined, very long and complex in the mouth with a delicious cherry fruit character and tiers of floral, spice and mineral notes. The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon has a classic, elegant structure, refined tannin and a refreshing juiciness. Elegant, classic, very long and so delicious that it demands another glass. Harvest Date: October 4th–11th 2018. Bottled: May 22, 2020. 350 cases produced.

Critical Acclaim

“The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is outrageously beautiful. Rich, vivid and wonderfully deep, the 2018 hits so many high notes. Inky dark fruit, graphite, spice, leather, licorice and expressive earthy nuances are all laced together. In the glass, the 2018 is deep yet also light on its feet, with tremendous flavor intensity and superb balance. It is also one of the very best values in top-flight Napa Valley Cabernet. Don't miss it.”–96 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

“The 2018 is shaping up to be one of the wines of this important Napa Valley harvest. Crushed rocks, crème de cassis, licorice, menthol, pine, lavender and licorice all pulse through this structured, potent Cabernet Sauvignon. Fresh, vibrant and light on its feet, the 2018 is positively stunning. I can't wait to taste it from bottle.”–95-97 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

Snack of the Week:

Flo's Grows Local Raw Pure Honey

Back by Popular Demand–Flo’s Grows suggests mixing this honey in with yogurt or using it to glaze a flank steak. They also swear it’s amazing on fish such as Salmon. Or by itself on a spoon. :-)
