About the Winery

Villa Sparina farm comprises 100 hectares of land, 70 of which are vineyards surrounded by woods, touched by a Ligurian breeze and kissed by the sun. Most of the vineyard found on the hillsides of Monterotondo is Cortese. The soul and prestige of Villa Sparina can be found, above all, in the character of the qualitative production of Villa Sparina. Since 1997 Villa Sparina vinifies separately, with meticulous skill, the grapes that come from a well-situated 1945 historic vineyard, on the basis of experience which has made the fruit particularly rich and complex.

A wine-making farm in Monterotondo, Piedmont, is in the heart of the home of Gavi wine DOCG. The cultivation of grapes has been part of this land and of the lives of its people since time immemorial. Quality, personality and great wine. This, today, is Villa Sparina, a vineyard founded by the Moccagatta family in the 1970's. This farm has always put the territory at the center of its projects, with the history and culture tied to the grapes of the area. The three factors that the vineyard believes are essential to the production of great wines: both in the vineyard, growth on perfect ground, with an excellent position and mild climate.

About the Wine

This is the first year this wine is in production. As such, the team at Villa Sparina wanted the bottle to be contemporary, with a minimal and elegant design. The transparency of the bottle leaves room to the soft rosy nuances of this wine. The 25 year old Barbera and Dolcetto vines for the Villa Sparina Rosé are exposed southwest at 1148-1312 feet above sea level situated on clayey-calcareous soils. After harvest, this wine is vinified in steel. A young wine, with floral scents, with layers of extraordinary freshness, followed by freshly picked flowers and minerality on the finish. This wine has great texture–it is harmonious, velvety, with great body and balance.

About the Winery

The Venge (ven-ghee) family has farmed vitis viniferra varieties in Napa Valley for nearly a half-century. It is a journey that began when Knud Venge migrated from Denmark to the United States in the early 1900’s. Knud's son, Per Venge, found his passion in the wine and spirits industry and started Vencom Imports, focusing on the importation of Western European fine wines and spirits. It was Per's son, Nils Venge, who left the family business in the 1960's with a vision to study viticulture at UC Davis and establish the family namesake as an icon within the winegrowing community.

The family's viticultural roots flourished in 1976 with the purchase of a 17-acre vineyard in the Oakville District that was planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This fortunate development cast the family among the winemaking pioneers of Napa Valley. Nils' son, Kirk Venge, gravitated to winemaking at an early age. He proved to be as talented a winemaker as his father, making wines in his own style, with a vision to build his own legacy in the valley. In 2008, Kirk achieved his lifelong dream and acquired full ownership of Venge Vineyards from his family. Today, Kirk continues the Napa Valley heritage, focusing on select vineyard sites that produce fruit worthy of bearing the Venge family name.

About the Wine

This delicious red blend honors the Venge’s late and beloved Labrador Retriever, Scout. This wine is based on a tradition of producing a full bodied and delicious red wine. The team starts with a base of old-vine Zinfandel and builds upon that with dry-farmed Petite Sirah, old-vine Charbono, and finishes with mountain vineyard Syrah. The result is an unpretentious, generous mouthful of red wine. This wine has a gorgeous, concentrated assemblage of violets, anise, honeysuckle, blue herbs, and a touch of vanillin. The palate is pure richness with loads black fruits and currants, pepper spice, and an enveloping masculinity of char and tannins from the Syrah, Charbono and Petite Sirah. A seamless balance and mouth coating deliciousness lead to a wine that is quite pleasing to the senses. Cellared correctly it will age for 5 to 8 years. 63% Zinfandel, 16% Charbono, 12% Petite Sriah, 9% Syrah.

Snack of the Week:

Brebirousse D'Argental

An ooey-gooey wonder sure to please any crowd, with a creamy paste that threatens to run free of its annatto-tinged rind. Luscious and silky enough for brie-lovers, sheepy and full-flavored enough for the most adventurous palate, its bright orange rind refuses to be ignored, but its delicate sweetness balances the buttery intensity with aplomb. Made in Lyon, France, of pure pasteurized sheep milk--richer and creamier than cow's milk--Brebirousse (literally: red sheep) is everything we could want in a cheese: savory, creamy, nutty and complex. Play up savory notes with thick slices of ham on crusty baguette, tease out the milky sweetness with dried apricots, or enhance the intensity with a dollop of earthy chestnut honey, alongside a glass of bubbly.
