About the Winery The Neveu family, viticulteurs father and son, have been based in the heart of the Chavignol vineyards for generations, and today carry on the tradition of the great Sancerrois vignerons. Valérie (André Neveu’s daughter), and her husband Thomas, now run the domaine that extends to about 13 hectares of vines of AOC Sancerre red, white and rosé. They harvest, vinify and sell everything themselves. Silex is a very hard sedimentary rock that gives smoky aromas. The soil gives way for a mineral flavor that develops over the years. This stony and limestone soil produces elegant and fruity wines that are very pleasant when drunk young or for making more structured wines, good for long ageing. About the Wine From the Sauvignon Blanc grape whose vines are planted on the Sancerre hillside, a terroir composed exclusively of Silex. Produced from 50 year old vines planted on a limestone pebble soil, this wine gives intense aromas, a pleasing roundness, and length in the mouth. With an incomparable color, fruity and refreshing, this is a worthy Sancerre. Powerful, the aromas as varied as they are classic: stone fruits are well represented, with hints of limestone and minerality. The mouthfeel is elegant and supple. A good balance between roundness and freshness shows on the mid-palate. Clean and lively on the finish, the persistent retro-olfaction has fruity notes of apricot and peach, this is a white Sancerre with a forthright character. * * * 2018 Failla Willamette Valley Pinot Noir Normally $34.99–$29.74 15% Off This Week ONLY! About the Winery After cutting his winemaking teeth assisting a consultant in France’s Rhone Valley during the difficult 1992 and 1993 vintages, Ehren Jordan went on to make powerful Petite Sirahs and Zinfandels for Turley Wine Cellars. The lessons he learned in France about maximizing ripeness in challenging conditions now serve Jordan at the 85-acre property on the Sonoma Coast, about 2.5 miles from the Pacific Ocean. In 1998 Ehren planted another parcel contiguous to their first, and in 2002 planted it with five acres of rootstock before grafting six selections of long-coveted Pinot Noir scion material the following year. Ehren’s commitment to the highest standards of viticultural practice, coupled with his education in France and throughout California, is expressed in every bottle of Failla Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. About the Wine Coming from practicing Organic/Sustainable vineyards, the grapes for this pinot noir are sourced from Chehalem Mountain, Seven Springs, Bjornson, and Eola Springs vineyards. After harvest from the end of September through the end of October, the grapes are fermented in native yeasts with 25% whole cluster fruit. The whole cluster fruit gives extra structure and tannins to the final wine. The wine is then aged for nine months sur lie in 10% new French oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. When poured, expect layers of red and black fruit aromas such as crushed raspberries and black cherries mingling with nuances of flowers and forest floor. Upon first sip, the palate is smooth and supple with fine-grained tannins. Notes such as orange peel and purple flowers intertwine with hints of pomegranate and rose petals–giving way to layers of river rocks, forest floor, and subtle spices. I loved it.”–92 Points, Vinous * * * Also Tasting Today: 2020 Domaine Reine Juliette Pays D’Oc Languedoc Grenache Syrah Rose $15.99 About the Winery Domaine Reine Juliette sits along the southern side of the modern A9, which historically was the Via Domitia which connected Italy to Spain. The road played an important part in expanding viticulture in the Languedoc, The Via Domitia was also known as via Reine Juliette after a queen of the same name who once travelled along it. Since the estate borders the road, it was named after this queen. This relationship to the region’s deep history is appropriate as Guillaume Alliès is one of the guiding forces moving Picpoul into the future; a future of higher quality, lower yields and more conscientious vineyard work. Guillaume and his sister Marion inherited the estate from his parents in 1985, and they are now joined by his son Guillaume in working the land. Together they are the 6th and 7th generations of Alliès making wine at Reine Juliette. Although the estate is sizable (100 ha of total plantation), all the fruit is destemmed before being gently pressed pneumatically. After destemming, the juice is fermented and aged at precisely controlled temperatures to preserve absolute freshness. But perhaps the most distinctive thing about the wines of Reine Juliette is that they are 100% estate grown and bottled. About the Wine 50% Syrah, 50% Grenache planted to marl and red clay soils. Fruit is 100% destemmed and sorted then blended of free run and pneumatic press juice. After blending and pressing, fermentation is employed in enamel-lined cement tanks and aged just enough in bottle prior to release. When poured, coral pink hues shine throughout the glass. Aromas of tropical notes are followed by minerality and freshly picked strawberries, which are pleasant to the senses. Upon first sip, you will be truly delighted–this wine is easy like a summer day. A true sipper for that warm (hot, humid, etc.) weather day. Murray’s 18 Month Aged Comte has rich flavors of dried fruit, brown butter, hazelnut, and a surprisingly supple texture. It is aged for 18 months in Fort de Rousses, a repurposed stone military fort commissioned by Napoleon in the 1800s, located in France’s Jura mountains. The fort comprises seven levels, most of which are hidden underground and built for optimal affinage.
