About the Winery: After years of working in the industry for others, in March 2006, Sarah and Sparky Marquis’s tale of love, hard work and determination led them to start their own brand, Mollydooker (meaning ‘Left Hander’ in Australian slang). The plan was to create a range of wines that were housed by beautiful packaging and design, with dashes of color and images that would tell a story. The Marquis Philips brand was a runaway success, growing from 8,000 to 120,000 cases in just four years. There was even talk of growing even bigger until one day, Sarah and Sparky took stock and decided that this was not the life they wanted to lead. They loved the vineyards, loved making wine and loved sharing with friends. They didn’t want to become corporate and they didn’t ever want to compromise on quality. So, they decided to go it alone, staying small and hands-on. For example, if the grapes are not up to their standards one vintage, they just won’t produce that wine for the cuvee or vintage. In the 2008 vintage they only bottled their Lefty wines and in 2015, they only bottled their Lefty and Family wines. This is a true testament to their commitment to quality and honoring their customers who spend their hard-earned dollars on wine.

Fast forward to 2017 and as is the case with any good story, as one chapter comes to an end another one begins. These days, Sarah and Sparky are pursuing their own ‘Enchanted Paths’, with Sarah taking the reins as sole owner and winemaker, now running the business with the support of the very talented and experienced Mollydooker team.

About the Wine: Named after Sparky who raced a big tire scooter when he was younger, The Scooter Merlot is dynamic. When poured, hues of deep purple are accompanied by rich aromas such as plums and black fruits, there is a gentle touch of oak on the nose. On the palate expect a beautiful integration of fruit and chocolate followed by layers of sweet spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon, and cardamom on the front to mid-palate. The satiny texture on this wine is evident of ripe fruit and beautiful tannin integration, which winds up on the palate to give a soft mouthfeel and pleasant finish.

2016 was Mollydooker’s biggest vintage to date, during March and April the weather remained mild which was perfect for grape maturation, allowing the flavor and Marquis Fruit Weight™ (the measure of how far back on your tongue the velvety sensation of fruit goes before you experience the sensation of structure) to consistently increase week by week. The grapes spent around seven days on skins before employing fermentation in barrel; the ferments were well behaved and finished off beautifully in barrel, allowing early oak integration and added complexity in the wines. Picked on April 21st, barrel fermented and matured in 96% American Oak and 4% French Oak (19% new; 41% 1 year old; 40% 2 years old).
